CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CHARGER HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM, TEXAS INDEPENDENTS BOWL CHAMPIONS! November 12 & 14 was the first Texas Independents Bowl, showcasing four fine independent six-man football teams. All teams played hard and are to be congratulated! The Chargers were victorious in a 60-25 win Saturday night at Hohlt Park in Brenham. This was a great event that we hope to repeat with more teams next year. Special awards were given to Bryan Walker, Outstanding Leadership Award; Andrew Kiesle, Outstanding Special Teams Player; Stephen Ash, Outstanding Offensive Player; Barak Cloe, Outstanding Defensive Player; and John Kamas, tournament MVP. The JV team has ended their season with an outstanding 9-2 record, and look forward to a fine varsity season next year. WAY TO GO CHARGERS!

There has been some interest in a CenTex Chargers Cross Country team for the Fall of 2009--both for middle schoolers and high schoolers. Cross Country is a great sport for those who love to run and for those who desire to get in shape for other sports!
Meets will begin around the beginning to middle of August, so we would like to start practicing a few times a week so we can be ready. Typical meet distances are 2 miles, with the exception of high school guys, which will be 3 miles. Most will be on Friday or Saturday mornings and will cost around $5 to $10 a runner. The more runners we have, the less expensive the meet fees will be!
Everyone will need to purchase a CenTex Chargers jersey (running singlet) and these will cost under $20, likely between $15 and $18. We will wear these, along with black shorts, to the meets so that everyone will be able to represent our team!
We would like to know who is interested in running with us this fall and what days and times would work best for practicing for during the summer and additionally, in the fall.
If you are interested, click the "Contact Us" link on the left menu and email us by Wednesday, July 22nd, so that we can begin practicing and order the jerseys, we would appreciate it!
Thanks so much!

We have a hotel group rate of $59 at the LAQUINTA right across the street from the track. To get the group rate: call 254-771-2980 and ask for the group rate for the "STATE TRACK MEET." The price is only good through April 11. The address of this LaQuinta is 1604 W. Barton Ave., Temple, TX 76504-2457. I personally looked at one of the rooms and it looked fine. They have a breakfast bar that includes the make-your-own waffle makers, cereal, yogurt, oatmeal, fruit, bagels, and hard-boiled eggs. Within easy walking distance (half block), there is a Long John Silvers, Wendy's, Shipley's Donuts, Whataburger, Arby's, Taco Bell, Chick-fil-a, and Starbucks. Within a block or so is also a McDonald's, KFC, and HEB grocery store. I have 30 rooms blocked, but remember the price is only good through APRIL 11!!!

Hotel Chart.doc (46.00 K)Some have been asking about hotel information, so I have made a chart of hotels in the area, including prices, amenites, and distance from the track. (Click on "Hotel Chart" in the upper left corner of this email.) PLEASE get online and look up some reviews to satisfy yourself about the quality of the hotel you choose. (I don't stay in hotels around here myself!) There is a La Quinta across the street from the track. I have gotten a group rate at the La Quinta of $59. Call 254-771-2980 and ask for the group rate for the "STATE TRACK MEET." It is easy walking distance. The Hilton Garden Inn is very nice. The Residence Inn is very new, and they usually have a lot of extra room, sometimes fold-out coaches, etc. to get more people in. The two Salado hotels listed are rather new, and are on the south side of town. Salado also has numerous bed-and-breakfasts, and is an "antique" town similar to Fredericksburg. If you're into that, you might start at www.bedandbreakfast.com/salado-texas.html.
I hope this helps! We are hearing from lots of people all over the state, and are very excited with the response so far!

Reg Form.doc (15.00 K)The first-ever Texas State Homeschool Track Meet will be April 25, 2009, in Temple, Texas. Because this is the first one, we will be playing some things by ear. For example, we will start with four divisions, but we may combine divisions if there are not enough entrants in a particular division. Also, we may cut certain events if there are not enough entrants for that event. This is one reason it is critical to get your registration in as early as possible!
ELIGIBILITY: Eligibility for this meet will be determined by AGE ON THE DAY OF THE MEET.
DIVISIONS BY AGE: 17-18, 15-16, 13-14, and 12 and under. There is no minimum age for the “12 and under” division. If you have a young athlete who is willing to compete with 12-year-olds, he or she is welcome. If time permits, we will have a PeeWee 50m Dash for children 10 and under (no registration required). If you have any special circumstances to be considered concerning these divisions, please contact the meet director.
FEES: Athletes: $10 per athlete Spectators: $5 for adults and $2 for students with a $15 family cap
THE REGISTRATION FORM IS ATTACHED TO THIS NEWS ARTICLE.
We look forward to seeing you all there!
